Evaporative Cooling in the 2 Π 3 / 2 State Lucie

The scattering at ultralow temperatures of fermionic 14N16O molecules in the metastable Π3/2 is considered, under the influence of parallel electric and magnetic fields. It is found that a magnetic field of several thousand Gauss can enhance the ratio of elastic-to-inelastic collision rates. The magnetic field can therefore assist the electric field in increasing this ratio. Evaporative cooling of NO is feasible only in the presence of combined magnetic and electric field ands for temperatures above about 70 mK.
